Or I’m a journalist and I use my pen? You can have that for the sequel.ĭW: We had this ex-navy Seal guy training us. I’m working in a restaurant across the road. What would you be doing with a corkscrew anyway?Įr… maybe I’m a wine waiter. If I stabbed their eyes out with a corkscrew though …ĭW: You say taking the law into your own hands, but the cops in the movie, they take the law into their own hands. Taking the law into your own hands? He does that, doesn’t he?ĪF: Yeah, but let me ask you a question: If you saw a kid being bullied on, and you went over to some kid and said, ‘Stop doing that.’ And they got aggressive, and you had to push one of them against the wall to make him stop, is that vigilante? He’s not out just killing people, hunting for the next guy. But this guy doesn’t go out and hurt people they come after him. The Equalizer’s idea of justice is almost literally an eye for an eye, but surely vigilantism isn’t recommended in the real world?ĪF: No. If I’m going to see my mom, I’m going to church! I went when I was in Pittsburgh seeing my mom. I’ll be going Sunday when I’m in New York.ĪF: I haven’t been in a while. Like Denzel said once, God needs warriors too.ĭW: Yep. Should we see your character as some kind of avenging angel?ĭW: : What’s that tattoo you’ve got?ĪF : Who is like God? None of us. There’s a lot of religious symbolism in the movie: Russian icons, tattoos of devils. If you come in the room thinking that way, you’ll see what you want to see. But I know him and he’s one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet and he cares about others. Photograph: Rexĭo you think people find you intimidating?ĪF: I’ve heard people say he’s intimidating. Oscar winner … Denzel Washington in Training Day. Because if you don’t smile, the way you look at people, they’ll think you’re mad at them.” That’s special, man.ĭW: My mother used to tell me: “You gotta smile more. You can feel it right now, can’t you? He’ll smile and laugh at you, but there’s still an energy. He doesn’t talk much in the movie, so how else do you show that?ĭW: I don’t do a stare! I try to work from the inside out, not the outside in.ĪF: There’s a “sustained intensity”, I call it, with Denzel, anyway. I was thinking about lunch!ĪF: I wanted you to see him getting mad. There’s a lot of close-ups of your eyes, looking mean.ĭW: It’s not even mean. One of the most abiding images in the movie is the character’s mean stare. I don’t know if it’s coincidence or what. Ironically, now the Russians are again back in the news in a negative way. On the east coast it was more the Russian mob guys starting to get busted. Training Day was during the Rampart scandal in LA. They were coming into New York and taking over a lot of the Italian mafia’s turf.ĪF: Yeah. Those evil Swedes!ĪF: The thing about the Russians is, when we did Training Day, they were really making a lot of noise. Do you think that suggests America’s crime landscape hasn’t really changed?ĭW: Who else would you pick? Maybe we should have made it Swedes. There are some similarities between The Equalizer and Training Day. ‘We both enjoyed success coming off of Training Day’ … Denzel Washington with Antoine Fuqua. He said: “You have a contract and it will be honoured.” So it went away for a couple of years, then they called and said Ridley Scott was interested. My late agent Ed Limato, God rest his soul, was a master businessman. Talking of which, I hear you got paid twice for that movie, Denzel? ĭW: One and a half times. What happened?ĪF: You learn to … navigate. You nearly did American Gangster together. No I’d already shot it, I was going back to editing. I won’t do that again.ĭW: Nah, I didn’t party, either. I didn’t even get to enjoy the Academy awards. You were stacked up a couple of pictures.Īntoine Fuqua: Yeah. We both enjoyed success coming off of Training Day. The cops are also said to have searched a small port in Maiori, where the production had also established a base of operations.Denzel Washington: Success. With that, the police wondered whether other drug paraphernalia was present in the area. The news outlet reports that small packs of cocaine were later found in his clothes. The drug bust was apparently initiated after the head of the production’s catering service suffered a fatal heart attack on Monday. It’s said that another member of the catering staff was found with a small possession and as a result, had his driver’s license taken away. Two other caterers were also hit with alleged drug dealing charges and placed under house arrest in the resort. The trade reports that the authorities ultimately seized 120 grams of cocaine, which led to the arrest of two catering service employees. Italian paramilitary police apparently searched for drugs in the Maiori-based resort where the Equalizer 3 crew was staying. Said raid took place on Tuesday, according to Variety.
